These scrappy holiday cards are a fun, fast way to use up fabric and vinyl scraps. Stitch scrap shapes onto card stock, add a clear glitter vinyl window, and even tuck loose glitter inside so it floats like snow. They make sweet handmade Christmas cards and gift tags, and they're a great craft to keep kids busy over the holidays.
Use what you have on hand! Card stock, fabric scraps, vinyl scraps, glitter, and Mod Podge are all you really need.
What You'll Make
Handmade holiday cards with stitched fabric and vinyl designs. I made two styles: Christmas trees cut from fabric with a clear glitter vinyl overlay and loose glitter inside, and holly cut from vinyl scraps.

Skill level: Beginner, and fun for kids with a grown-up at the sewing machine.
Supplies
- Card stock, folded into cards
- Fabric scraps (Christmas prints, greens, and reds work great)
- Vinyl scraps. My Vinyl Scrap Packs are perfect for this!
- Clear glitter vinyl or clear glitter stars vinyl for the window overlay
- Loose glitter (optional, for the floating snow effect)
- Mod Podge
- Scissors
- A Teflon foot for your sewing machine, so it glides over the vinyl
- Thread
How to Make Scrappy Holiday Cards
Step 1: Cut your shapes
Cut simple holiday shapes like trees, holly leaves, berries, or stars from your fabric and vinyl scraps. They don't have to be perfect; the scrappy look is part of the charm.
Step 2: Arrange and glue
Lay your shapes on the front of the card. Use a little Mod Podge to hold them in place so they don't shift while you sew.
Step 3: Add the clear glitter vinyl window
Cut a piece of clear glitter vinyl a little bigger than your design and lay it over the top.
Step 4: Stitch around, leaving an opening
Put a Teflon foot on your machine so it slides easily over the vinyl. Stitch all the way around the vinyl overlay, but leave a small opening if you want to add loose glitter.
Step 5: Add glitter and close it up
Once the overlay is sewn on nicely, pour a little glitter through the opening. Then stitch the opening closed. The glitter floats around inside the window like falling snow!
Step 6: Cover the stitching on the back
Your stitching shows on the inside of the card. To hide it, sew or glue a piece of vinyl or card stock over the back of the design. I used a sparkly vinyl, and I love how it looks.

Holiday Card FAQ
Can you sew on card stock?
Yes! A sewing machine stitches right through card stock. Use a longer stitch length so the holes aren't too close together, which can make the paper tear.
What presser foot should I use to sew vinyl?
A Teflon (non-stick) foot glides over vinyl instead of sticking to it. A walking foot or a strip of matte tape on the bottom of your regular foot also works.
How do I get glitter to float inside the card?
Sew a clear vinyl window over your design and leave a small opening. Pour in loose glitter, then stitch the opening closed.
Is this a good craft for kids?
Absolutely. Kids can cut shapes, glue them with Mod Podge, and pick their glitter, while a grown-up handles the sewing machine.
What else can I make with vinyl scraps?
Gift tags, ornaments, bookmarks, and key chain pouches. Check out the projects below for more ideas.
